How does Health Care Reform affect me?

This law affects Americans in different ways. Two of the main ways are:

  1. For millions of Americans that could not access medical insurance because of pre-existing medical conditions; there is a provision in the new law that says that we cannot be declined health insurance because of a medical condition. In fact, health insurance companies cannot ask any medical questions at all.
  2. For millions of other Americans high premium costs kept them from affording or purchasing health insurance. For the poorest of Americans, Medicaid (Medical in California) is being expanded to millions of people. People making up to 137% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) will qualify. Other Americans earning between 138% and 400% of FPL may qualify for Premium Assistance to help pay for part of their insurance premium for them.

What is a Premium Subsidy? Do I Qualify for a Subsidy?

As mentioned above, a Premium Subsidy is a provision in the Health Care Reform that pays for part of the premium on a monthly basis for people who make between 138% and 400% of FPL. There are calculators to determine the exact amount and there are certain requirements. Ask Brines Insurance if you qualify.

Will my premiums go down because of Health Care Reform?

When the Health Care Reform law was being sold to the American public we were told that on average a family would save around $2400 per year on their health insurance premiums. In Chico California new rates are showing about an 80% increase in premium. It varies by age. Younger people will see a higher increase and older people, over 55 years old may see premiums only slightly higher or close to old rates.

What happens to my current health insurance policy?

Most Chico CA residents will lose their existing plans and they will have to purchase new “Qualified Plans” beginning January 1, 2014. People who have plans that were purchased prior to the law passage March 23, 2010 and have not changed that plan since then, may be able to keep their plans going forward. Ask Brines Insurance if you can keep your current plan.

Will I have to change my doctor?

The new Health Care Reform may make you change your doctor. The doctor networks going forward are going to be smaller than before the law was passed.
